The re-working of an existing 1980’s project-home to create a whole-new-world. Strategically prudent, the concept involves maintaining the majority of the existing mass while restructuring space that generates experiential delight, in this way the project is designed to conserve embodied energy and provoke the senses. Understood as an ‘unfurling interior’ that is revealed in time, the Carine House orchestrates a series of moments intended to engender a sense of place and build atmosphere. Rooms and gardens are purposefully correlated, a series of thickened walls configure a pinwheel order of timber lined rooms that intensify space, filter natural light and orientate attention through deep dark glossy portals, across stone terraces, to carefully curated gardens.A total of12m2 are added while the entirety of the home is transformed. The home is now accessed through a northern courtyard with shaded terrace and flower garden. Entry is formed as a pause space with storage and a window seat framing a Gleditsia beyond. The living room geometry is clarified, media services are shifted into a thick end wall, top light defines an entry threshold, and a gloss black double bay-window acts as a deep edge to the north terrace courtyard and scented garden. At the centre, the dining room provides the family focus, orientated towards the West Terrace and swimming pool, to the east the kitchen acts as a niche space that opens out to an intimate morning terrace and aromatic herb garden. Bedrooms are separated from the primary living spaces, entered through darkened portals, the master bedroom faces into the northern courtyard while southern bedrooms are extended to ensure comfortable retreats for growing boys.
